Local Context

The program seeks to integrate technical and scientific knowledge to benefit and involve the local community, the scientific community and researchers, linking biodiversity knowledge and climate change in the Bananal Island region, an area of three major Brazilian biomes: Cerrado, Amazon and Pantanal.

The biological richness in the region and its importance to ecological balance led to the creation of the Araguaia National Park (PNA) and the Cantão State Park (PEC). These protected areas are defined by the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Bananal Island/Cantão.

Project Description

The project aims to contribute to biodiversity preservation and promotion, climate change mitigation, environmental education and consolidation of research activities in Canguçu Research Center (CPC). The program consists of three components: strengthening the CPC’s infrastructure, environmental education and scientific research.

The project implementation will ensure income generation for the local community, technical exchange between national and international organizations, dissemination of the results, biodiversity preservation, reduced soil degradation and environmental education.

Among the specific goals, the highlights are: renovation and expansion of the CPC; project dissemination through seminars, brochures and an educational video; environmental awareness campaign through education, sports and distribution of seedlings; database; training programs and selection process for scholarships; scientific publications. The project also intends to finalize the Environmental Education Demonstrative Unit of Bananal Island, in order to develop research and biological monitoring of species of turtles and implement research in carbon flux.
