Local Context

Located in Tocantins, the project included a partnership with Investco S.A. and lasted from 2000 to 2002. It had as main objective to mitigate the social and environmental impacts caused by the construction of the Lajeado HPP.

Other partners: IBAMA, Naturatins, Public Ministry, Education Secretariat, Environmental Education Commission and the NGOs’ Forum.

Project Description

The activities included various initiatives to inform the community affected by the reservoir and encourage a process of participatory discussion on how to minimize impacts, changes in livelihood and sustainable use of the environment. Some of the results achieved: 54 training sessions that have benefited indirectly about 60,000 students in the region; training of 2,032 teachers and members of environmental NGOs; 121 theater presentations focused public awareness reaching a total audience of 36,000 people; more than 9,000 actions including distribution of seedlings, events encouraging people to plant trees and workshops about recycling.
