The LBA is an international research initiative led by Brazil, being developed to generate new knowledge to understand the climatic, ecological, biochemical and hydrological behavior of the Amazon region. It also is studying the impact of changes in the soil use on this behavior and the interaction between the Amazon region and the bio-geophysical system of the earth. The Island of Bananal project is incorporated in the Millennium Institute LBA Project approved in the CNPq.
The Energy and Carbon Flow Tower is installed in an ecotonal area, that is to say, a transition area between two or more biomasses or ecosystems. The predominant biomasses in the surrounding areas of the Island of Bananal appear as areas of ecological tension, marked by the transition of ecosystems with a high biodiversity potential. The research area is situated in the region of the deforested swathe, thus it is a region suffering intense land use changes, whose impacts are not thoroughly known.
The project’s logistics base is the Canguçu Research Center (CPC). The Canguçu Research Center is the fundamental support base for the projects activities, establishing a complimentary support to the Ecological Institute to the research groups from other locations where the decisions of proposals, implementation and development of activities are addressed.
OBJECTIVE
The LBA evolves the effort to establish an experimental site to make long term measurements that compliment and offer a wide vision of the physical-biotic system, and that strengthens the local structure and trains regional human resources, with the aim to establish a research nucleus.
PROJECT RESULTS
The project achieved the installation of an energy and carbon flow tower in the region surrounding the Island of Bananal. The tower is responsible for the generation of various meteorological, climatologic and energy and carbon flow variables, which are analyzed by professionals with a wide range of expertise. The results of the research to date have already been presented in scientific congresses in Brazil and throughout the world. The project has already generated doctorate theses, masters dissertations and various conclusion of course works.
