Position of the Coconut River Basin.

The region of the Environmental Protection Areas of Bananal/Cantão Islands in which are in the Coconut River Basin is located to the west of the Tocantins State. The municipal regions of Pium, Caseara and Marianópolis occupy a large part of the Coconut River Basin and are almost completely confined to the Environmental Protection Area of Bananal-Cantão.

The quality of the hydro resources in the Coconut River region, one of the tributaries of the right bank of the Araguaia, are being threatened by the process of environmental degradation principally provoked by deforestation and an increase in the exploration of natural resources. This in turn has been caused by the swelling populations of the surrounding municipals. Conservation action of the region’s springs include, the promotion of environmental reservations, with an emphasis on spring and water course woodland areas, in addition to the broadcasting of knowledge in environmental education projects directed at local agents.

OBJECTIVES
    Perform a preliminary study to check more thoroughly the socio-economic situation of the land claim settlement. This study would serve as a base line to analyze the improvements achieved.

    Develop a program of environmental education to provoke the creation of management committee for the Coconut River Basin;

    Propose the creation of a SIG (System of Geographic Information) structure to support the creation of National Preservation Park areas;

    Conduct a mapping and diagnosis of the use of soil and water by the communities located within the study area;

    Encourage the generation of income between the communities through knowledge and exploration of native crops aiming at integrated dealing in the Coconut River Basin;

    Provide training to the technicians of public organs and partner organizations to implement the State National Preservation Park Program;

    Promote the production of shrubs and the recuperation of 20 hectares of the water course woodlands of the Coconut River Basin.

EXPECTED RESULTS
    Creation of a Committee for the Hydrographic Basins;

    Identification of new areas for the implantation of National Reservation Parks;

    Generation of income for the involved communities;

    Training of technical trainers and "multipliers";

    Recuperation of watercourse woodlands;

    Improve the sustainable resources of the involved communities.
